Project Overview
This project involved constructing a life-size replica of the iconic astromech droid R2-D2 from the Star Wars films, combining fabrication, electronics integration, mechanical assembly, and finishing techniques. The goal was to create a recognizable, screen-inspired prop while exploring the intersection of maker engineering, practical fabrication, and educational STEM applications.
The droid was assembled using a combination of 3D-printed components, fabricated structural elements, and purchased hardware, requiring careful calibration of print settings, material strength, alignment, and assembly tolerances. Structural parts were printed in sections and reinforced to keep the build durable while still manageable in weight.
Post-processing included sanding, priming, painting, and finishing to achieve the distinctive metallic appearance associated with the character. The build also opened the door to functional electronics work, including lighting, sound, and motor integration.
